Long Beach City Jail Detainee Commits Suicide
Long Beach City Jail detainee Andrew Dodson was pronounced dead on Jan. 1 after attempting suicide while in police custody.
Dodson had been arrested at his residence on Dec. 30 on a drug charge. The Long Beach Post has reported he was discovered by a detention officer late that night "hanging from the jail cell bars by his sweatpants". He was transported to a local hospital by paramedics and pronounced dead on Jan. 1.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office is currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Dodson's death is also being investigated by homicide detectives. Officials have said that investigations of this kind are standard-practice when an inmate dies while in custody.
